Abstract

Vocational education is crucial for India's 2047 development goals amidst global economic shifts. This study examined 100 Class VIII students in Delhi using ANOVA to assess employability, digital skills, entrepreneurial awareness, and career readiness. By analyzing perceptions through descriptive statistics, the research highlights the vital role of vocational training in strengthening human capital and bridging skill gaps. Findings confirm that integrating vocational education with mainstream schooling—emphasized in NEP 2020—significantly enhances student preparedness. The study concludes that a robust, inclusive, and technology-driven skill ecosystem is essential to transform India's demographic dividend into productive human capital.

Introduction#

India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047 requires a strong, skilled, innovative, and future-ready population. As the country moves towards the completion of 100 years of independence, education and skill development have become central instruments of national transformation. A developed India cannot be built only through economic growth, infrastructure expansion, or technological advancement; it also requires human resources who are capable of contributing productively to society and the economy. In this context, skills development and vocational education play a significant role in preparing youth for employment, entrepreneurship, self-reliance, and sustainable development (Government of India, 2020; MSDE, 2024).

Traditional education has often focused more on theoretical knowledge, while the modern economy demands practical ability, technical competence, digital literacy, problem-solving capacity, communication skills, and adaptability. Vocational education helps bridge this gap by connecting learning with real work situations. It provides learners with occupation-based knowledge and hands-on training in different fields such as manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, information technology, tourism, construction, services, and emerging green sectors. Therefore, vocational education is not merely a supportive part of education; it is a necessary pathway for building a productive workforce (UNESCO, 2016; World Bank, 2023).

The National Education Policy 2020 has given special importance to the integration of vocational education with mainstream education. It emphasizes practical learning, flexibility, multidisciplinary education, internships, and skill-based training. This approach can help remove the traditional separation between academic and vocational streams and promote dignity of labour among students. When learners are introduced to vocational skills from an early stage, they become better prepared to understand career options, develop employability skills, and participate meaningfully in economic activities (Government of India, 2020).

The present study is based on a sample of 100 Class VII students from Delhi. These students were selected to assess their perceptions regarding skills development and vocational education in relation to employability skills, digital skills, entrepreneurial awareness, and career readiness. The inclusion of Class VII students is relevant because early exposure to vocational education can help learners develop practical understanding, career awareness, confidence, and future-ready competencies from the school level itself. Thus, the study attempts to examine how vocational education can contribute to skill formation among young learners in Delhi in alignment with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

Skills development is also closely linked with human capital formation. A skilled person is more capable of using technology, improving productivity, adapting to changing work environments, and creating livelihood opportunities. For India, which has a large youth population, skill development is essential for converting demographic strength into demographic dividend. If young people are provided with relevant and future-oriented skills, they can contribute to industrial growth, innovation, entrepreneurship, and social progress (ILO, 2021; MSDE, 2024).

In the present era, the nature of work is changing rapidly due to digitalization, artificial intelligence, automation, climate change, and global competition. This makes it necessary to reimagine vocational education according to future needs. Along with traditional vocational trades, learners need digital skills, green skills, financial literacy, entrepreneurial ability, communication skills, and lifelong learning habits. Such skills can prepare them not only for existing jobs but also for new opportunities that will emerge in the coming decades (OECD, 2023; UNESCO, 2022).

Vocational education also has an important role in promoting inclusive development. It can provide livelihood opportunities to rural youth, women, economically weaker sections, school dropouts, and marginalized communities. By making skill training accessible and affordable, India can reduce unemployment, improve income opportunities, support local enterprises, and strengthen social equity. Thus, vocational education is both an economic strategy and a social development tool (UNESCO, 2016; World Bank, 2023).

Review of Literature#

  1. Virmani (2026) examined India’s education and skilling system in relation to employment outcomes. The study highlighted that skill development should move beyond certificates and focus on actual learning outcomes, employability, and workplace readiness.

  2. Witarsyah and Almohab (2026) studied digital transformation in technical and vocational education. The study found that digital tools and technology-based learning improve vocational training quality and help learners develop future-ready competencies.

  3. Srivastava, Logar, Sanghvi, Vaghela, and Adwani (2025) studied vocational training and employability in Gujarat. The study found that vocational training improves employability, but training quality, placement support, and job retention remain important challenges.

  4. Mbambo (2025) evaluated digital skills among TVET college students. The study found that lack of digital competence affects students’ academic performance and career readiness, showing the need to include digital skills in vocational education.

Objectives of the Study#

1. To assess the effectiveness of skills development and vocational education in relation to employability skills, digital skills, entrepreneurial awareness, and career readiness.

2. To examine whether significant differences exist in students’ perceptions regarding skills development and vocational education using Analysis of Variance.

Hypothesis of the Study#

H₀₁: There is no significant effectiveness of skills development and vocational education in relation to employability skills, digital skills, entrepreneurial awareness, and career readiness.

H₁₁: There is significant effectiveness of skills development and vocational education in relation to employability skills, digital skills, entrepreneurial awareness, and career readiness.

H₀₂: There is no significant difference in students’ perceptions regarding skills development and vocational education.

H₁₂: There is a significant difference in students’ perceptions regarding skills development and vocational education.

Research Methodology#

The present study adopts a quantitative and implementation-based research methodology. The study is descriptive in nature and aims to assess the effectiveness of skills development and vocational education in relation to employability skills, digital skills, entrepreneurial awareness, and career readiness. A sample of 100 Class VII students from Delhi will be selected for the study. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire based on different dimensions of vocational education and skill development. The collected responses will be coded, tabulated, and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean, standard deviation, and percentage. Analysis of Variance will also be applied to examine whether significant differences exist in students’ perceptions regarding skills development and vocational education. This methodology is suitable because it helps in understanding the implementation and effectiveness of vocational education at the school level and its relevance for preparing students for the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

Data Analysis and its Interpretation#

The table and pie chart show that the total sample consisted of 100 Class VII students from Delhi. Out of these, 50 students were selected from Government Boys Senior Secondary School No. 1, Shalimar Bagh, and 50 students were selected from Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Shalimar Bagh. Thus, both schools contributed equally with 50% representation each.

B) Objective 1. To assess the effectiveness of skills development and vocational education in relation to employability skills, digital skills, entrepreneurial awareness, and career readiness. H₀₁: There is no significant effectiveness of skills development and vocational education in relation to employability skills, digital skills, entrepreneurial awareness, and career readiness.

H₁₁: There is significant effectiveness of skills development and vocational education in relation to employability skills, digital skills, entrepreneurial awareness, and career readiness.

The overall mean score is 4.21 with 84.15%, showing high effectiveness of skills development and vocational education. However, the p-value is 0.053, which is greater than 0.05. Therefore, H₀₁ is accepted, indicating that the effectiveness is not statistically significant.

The bar graph shows that skills development and vocational education were effective among the students. The overall mean score was 4.21 with an overall percentage of 84.15%, which indicates a high level of effectiveness. Among all dimensions, career readiness scored the highest, followed by employability skills, entrepreneurial awareness, and digital skills. However, the ANOVA result showed p = 0.053, which is greater than 0.05; therefore, H₀₁ is accepted, indicating that the effectiveness was positive but not statistically significant.

C) Objective 2: To examine whether significant differences exist in students’ perceptions regarding skills development and vocational education using Analysis of Variance.

H₀₂: There is no significant difference in students’ perceptions regarding skills development and vocational education.

H₁₂: There is a significant difference in students’ perceptions regarding skills development and vocational education.

Since the p-value is 0.028, which is less than 0.05, the ANOVA result is significant. Therefore, H₀₂ is rejected and H₁₂ is accepted. This means that a significant difference exists in students’ perceptions regarding skills development and vocational education.

The overall mean score is 4.13 and the overall percentage is 82.60%, which indicates a high level of effectiveness. Career readiness scored the highest, while digital skills scored comparatively lower. The ANOVA result shows F = 3.12 and p = 0.028. Since the p-value is less than 0.05, the result is significant. Therefore, H₀₂ is rejected and H₁₂ is accepted, indicating that significant differences exist in students’ perceptions regarding skills development and vocational education.

Major Findings of the Study#

  1. The study found that skills development and vocational education were effective among Class VII students of Delhi. The overall mean score was 4.13 with 82.60%, showing a high level of positive perception.

  2. Career readiness recorded the highest mean score of 4.36, indicating that students felt more prepared for future learning and career choices.

  3. Digital skills recorded the lowest mean score of 3.89, showing that this area needs more attention. Employability skills and entrepreneurial awareness also showed favourable results, with mean scores of 4.18 and 4.07.

  4. The ANOVA result showed F = 3.12 and p = 0.028, which was significant at the 0.05 level. Therefore, H₀₂ was rejected and H₁₂ was accepted, indicating significant differences in students’ perceptions regarding skills development and vocational education.

Results and Discussion#

The results of the study revealed that skills development and vocational education were effective among Class VII students of Delhi. The overall mean score was 4.13 with an overall percentage of 82.60%, which indicates a high level of positive perception among students. Among the selected dimensions, career readiness recorded the highest mean score of 4.36, showing that vocational education helped students develop awareness about future learning, career choices, and practical preparedness. Employability skills also showed a favourable mean score of 4.18, followed by entrepreneurial awareness with a mean score of 4.07. Digital skills recorded the lowest mean score of 3.89, which indicates that although students showed positive responses, digital skill development still requires more attention. The ANOVA result showed an F-value of 3.12 and a p-value of 0.028. Since the p-value was less than 0.05, the result was found to be statistically significant. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. This indicates that significant differences exist in students’ perceptions regarding skills development and vocational education.

Conclusion#

The study concludes that skills development and vocational education play an important role in preparing students for the future needs of education, employment, and national development. The findings show that students had a positive perception towards employability skills, digital skills, entrepreneurial awareness, and career readiness. The overall result indicates that vocational education is effective in developing practical and future-oriented competencies among Class VII students of Delhi.

The ANOVA result also revealed significant differences in students’ perceptions regarding skills development and vocational education. This shows that different skill dimensions are understood and experienced differently by students. Therefore, schools should strengthen vocational education through practical training, digital learning, career awareness activities, and entrepreneurship-based exposure. Overall, vocational education can help in building skilled, confident, and future-ready learners, which is essential for achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
